Richard H. Proctor ’43
Richard H. Proctor ’43 died June 7, 2013, at his home in Winter Park, Florida. At Dartmouth he was a member of Phi Delta Theta. Dick served two and a half years as an officer in the Navy on minesweepers off the East Coast and in the Caribbean. On returning home in 1945 he married Lucy MacPherson and went to work for the J.C. Penney Co. in New York City. Later, after short stints with Montgomery Ward and Sears Roebuck in Florida, he started his own retail business (the Proctor Shops) in 1950. In 1976 he retired from the retail business and joined the Florida real estate company, Florida Ranchlands. He much enjoyed working with Arnold Palmer in his purchase of 1,600 acres and was also involved with the assemblage of 27,000 acres for the Disney property south of Orlando. Dick was deeply involved with local affairs, serving on the Winter Park Hospital foundation board and two bank boards, and he was a founding member and past president of the Winter Park Racquet Club. He was also an active Republican at the local and national levels. Always loyal to Dartmouth, Dick served the College on the Alumni Council, class executive committee, reunion giving committee and club scholarship fund and as job development advisor and head regional and class agent. He was also a frequent Dartmouth visitor from his second home at Eastman in Grantham, New Hampshire. Dick was predeceased by his wife, Lucy. He is survived by children Penney and Richard ’72, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
