Lawrence R. Mayo ’60

Lawrence R. Mayo ’60 died on September 30, 2013, survived by his wife, Gail, children Peter, Eric and Robin and nine grandchildren. Larry was born in 1938 to loving parents Margaret and Ralph Mayo. He grew up in Colorado, where he developed a lifelong love of the mountains and an abiding stewardship for the earth. After graduating from Columbine High School he matriculated to Dartmouth, graduating in 1960 with major in geology. At Dartmouth he was actively involved in all activities related to the out-of-doors: crew, DOC, Geological Society and the Canoe, Mountaineering and Flying clubs. Following Dartmouth he went directly to Alaska, where he earned a master’s in geology from the University of Alaska and in 1962 began a 30-year career with the U.S. Geological Survey. Larry became a specialist in glacial studies, especially glacial responses to climate change. Larry’s entire adult life focused on conservation of our natural resources. He was involved in numerous conservation groups and projects and served a stint as president of the Alaska Conservation Society. Granddaughter Hazel, in paying tribute to her grandfather, said: “The spirit of my grandfather will live in the mountains and glaciers he loved and in the laughter of those connected to him.” A memorial service of celebration was held for Larry this past October. Memorials may be made to the Alaska Conservation Foundation, 441 West Fifth Ave., Suite 402, Anchorage, AK 99501.
