Russell E. Mack ’73

Russell E. Mack ’73 died May 30 of cancer at his vacation home on Lake Hubbard in Alpena, Michigan. Russ was a native of Freeport, New York, and graduated from Babylon (New York) High School. At Dartmouth he lived in Brown Hall, majored in psychology, was a member of the Marching Band and worked on the staff of WDCR. After Dartmouth Russ entered the book publishing business, working in New York City for Doubleday and Co. and later as an editor at HarperCollins. Russ moved to Michigan and transitioned into a second career as a business coach and consultant with General Motors and then with the Ford Motor Co. Russ published his own book on bartering (Bantam Books’ The Only Barter Book You’ll Ever Need) and books of other authors, some of which made The New York Times’ bestselling list. Rifle marksmanship and discussions of old movies and books were among his favorite hobbies. He was a class agent for the Alumni Fund from 1983 to 1985. Russ founded and was executive director of Leave No Donation Behind, an organization that helps charities maximize the value of non-cash donations. Russ is survived by his wife, Dale, children Katie, Jody and Tyler; stepsons Sean and Chris; and brother Bruce ’79 and his wife, Susan Astolfi Mack ’79. His late father, Ferris C. Mack, was a member of the class of 1936. Donations in memory of Russ, payable to “Leave No Donation Behind,” may be sent to Mrs. Dale Rankin-Mack, 7317 North Honore, Unit 1N, Chicago, IL 60626.
