Lewis Robert Weintraub ’55
Lewis Robert Weintraub ’55, M.D., of Dedham and North Falmouth, Massachusetts, passed away on August 18. Lew came to Dartmouth from Brooklyn. He was a member of Tau Epsilon Phi, Yacht Club, Aegis and Alpha Kappa Kappa. He entered the accelerated program at the Dartmouth Medical School, graduating subsequently from Harvard Medical School. He furthered his medical training at the University of Pennsylvania, University of Michigan and Mount Sinai hospitals. As a captain in the Army Lew carried on research on iron metabolism at Walter Reed Hospital. He returned to Boston in 1965, serving first at Tufts Medical School and New England Medical Center and then becoming an associate professor at Boston University School of Medicine in 1972. From 1977 to 2003 Lew served as hematology section chief, where he produced many papers as well as teaching and caring for patients. Always active in Dartmouth activities, Lew served as a club treasurer, medical class secretary, class agent and regional agent (1992-2002). He is survived by his wife, Joan, and sons Daniel ’93 and Jonathan and their spouses. The Lewis R. Weintraub Fund for Hematology Research at the Boston Medical Center would benefit from any donations.
