Ernest Stephens Jr. ’52

Ernest Stephens Jr. ’52 died on May 28 at his home in Georgetown, Texas. Born August 22, 1930, in Lynn, Massachusetts, Ernie came to college from Lynn English High School, majored in geology at Dartmouth and earned an M.A. in geology/geophysics from the University of Wyoming in 1958. At Dartmouth Ernie was a member of Sigma Nu. After college he joined the Geotechnical Corp., serving as party chief on nuclear blast field monitoring teams and participated in the Oak Ridge National Laboratories experiments in long-term disposal of radioactive waste in abandoned salt mines. He served as Geotech’s on-site coordinator at the Nevada Test Site, monitoring test explosions. When Geotech was acquired by Teledyne Inc. in 1965 he became supervisor of personnel recruiting and training. Thereafter he was industrial relations manager, ethics officer and vice president, human resources and relations. He retired from Teledyne in 1994 and moved to Georgetown. Ernie was active in the community and served in leadership positions with the Garland Personnel Association and the Garland YMCA. He was a Paul Harris Fellow, Rotary International. Ernie was an active Dartmouth alumnus, serving as a club secretary, treasurer and club president. He was also active as a fundraiser for his class and the College. Ernie’s brother Robert was killed on active duty in WW II and his father was Dartmouth, class of 1910. He was married almost 60 years to Elaine, who survives him. Also surviving are children Cynthia and Ernest III and one granddaughter.
