George W. Benz ’43

George W. Benz ’43 died April 30 in San Antonio, Texas. George graduated from Tuckahoe (New York) High School, where he was a member of its scholastic honorary society. He was a first generation American, his parents having come to the States from Germany. At Dartmouth George majored in chemistry and was a member of Sigma Chi and Tabard. After college he was president of Ulbeco Inc. in Paramus, New Jersey, a family-owned business. In the mid 1940s he went to the University of Texas, where he earned both an M.A. and Ph.D. While there he met Lois Garrison. They were married in 1947. Most of his career was spent as a professor of chemistry and department head at Ulster Community College in Stone Ridge, New York. After retirement George and Lois spent most of their time in Palm Beach Shores, Florida. Lois died in 2007. George is survived by his children George ’72, Lawrence ’75, Susan, Jonathan and Steven and daughter-in-law Patricia Jelley Benz ’76.
