Peter G. Serenyi ’57
Peter G. Serenyi ’57 died on October 22, 2012. He was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1931 and immigrated to this country in 1950 with his mother and five siblings, after graduating from the French Hungarian Lycée in Innsbruck, Austria. While at Dartmouth he was active in the Cosmopolitan Club, the International Relations Club and Germania. He graduated cum laude with a degree in the history of fine arts. Following Dartmouth Peter earned a master’s in history at Yale University and a Ph.D. in the history of architecture from Washington University in St. Louis. The subject of his dissertation was the Swiss architect, Le Corbusier, about whom he wrote numerous articles and edited a book, Le Corbusier in Perspective, published in 1975. Peter’s teaching career began at Amherst College, and continued at the University of Pennsylvania and Boston University. At Northeastern University he became the chairman on the department of art and architecture in 1983, retiring in 1996. He also taught courses at Harvard Extension
on architectural history. He was a beloved teacher and inspired many students during his career. Peter is survived by his wife, Agnes, children Peter and Denis ’96 and grandchildren Sebastian and Emma.
