John Clinton Cutler ’52

John Clinton Cutler ’52 died peacefully March 8 in Evanston (Illinois) Hospital. A 49-year resident of Wilmette, Illinois, he is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marilyn, and his feisty 5-year-old Airedale Harry Potter. John prepared for college at Evanston high school and graduated from Dartmouth with a degree in international relations. He then entered the U.S. Navy, trained and commissioned at the U.S. Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, and served with amphibious forces in the Western Pacific, 1953-56. During the Korean War he participated in the evacuation from French Indochina of nationals and expatriates. Subsequently, John graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology’s Chicago Kent College of Law with a J.D. in 1959. He practiced corporation, banking and business law in Chicago with CNA Financial and First National Bank of Chicago (now JPMorgan Chase). John was committed to sailing and raced one-design sailboats on Lake Michigan for 15 years, then took time out for 37 years to enjoy his cruising sailboats. He served as commodore of the Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club, 1966-67; commodore of the Chicago Yachting Association, 1968; and was a 45-year member of Chicago Yacht Club. He also served as general chairman of Chicago Venetian Night Parade of Boats, 1973-98.
