Robert Farnsworth Holmes ’52
Robert Farnsworth Holmes ’52 of North Sutton, New Hampshire, and Vero Beach, Florida, died at home in Florida on December 16, 2012, a victim of pancreatic cancer. He was born in 1930 in Chicago, attended public schools in Illinois, California and New Jersey and graduated from Dartmouth College in 1952. He majored in international relations, belonged to the International Relations Club and was a member of Theta Delta Chi. He then served as a lieutenant in the Marine Corps from 1952 to 1954. Upon discharge he joined IBM, serving first in domestic branch and district management assignments. He then moved to the international area and became the marketing director for the America’s-Far East group, and ultimately general manager of IBM Canada and Latin America. In 1980 he joined the Burroughs Corp., became president of worldwide marketing and retired in 1990. He was predeceased by his first wife, Lois, mother of their four sons—Robert ’76, Andrew, William ’79 and Kenneth ’81, Tu’85, all of whom survive him. He is also survived by his wife of more than 20 years, Betty Jean, as well as stepdaughters Nancy and Deborah. He also leaves four grandchildren and two step-grandsons. Bob was active in community affairs and an avid golfer, quite proud of his lifetime five holes-in-one. He enjoyed business and recreational travel and had visited each of the 50 states and every continent. In short, Bob was positive and enthusiastic about a myriad of interests.
