John Roland Pierce ’47
John Roland Pierce ’47, Ph.D., of Mentor, Ohio, died on January 11. He grew up in New Concord, Ohio, and attended Harvey High School. He was assigned to Dartmouth in the naval V-12 program. In college he majored in English, played basketball and joined Theta Delta Chi. He went on to earn an M.S. in English from Ohio State University in 1949 and a Ph.D. in 1959. He joined the humanities and English department of Case Western buy cialis Reserve University, where he became an associate professor of English. He received the Strosacker Award for excellence in teaching. He left teaching for the advertising field, where he earned many awards before retiring in 1988. For more than 40 years he enjoyed volunteering in the Cleveland, Ohio, Project Learn, dedicated to teaching English to adults, and in the Painesville, Ohio, Adult Basic and Literacy Education project, dedicated to helping young people obtain their GEDs and assisting students in improving their skills. He was also a longtime blood donor. He is survived by his wife and daughter.
