Mirick Friend ’63


Mirick Friend ’63 of Tuftonboro, New Hampshire, died March 18, 2012, at home surrounded by his family. He had been suffering from cancer, according to Bill Whiting ’63. Rick was born in Melrose, Massachusetts, and graduated from Governor’s Academy in Blyfield, Massachusetts. Rick majored in English at Dartmouth, was a brother of Tabard/Sigma Chi and played lacrosse. He was among five members of his family who graduated from Dartmouth. The other four were his father, Robert Friend ’29, brother Robert Friend III ’58 and uncle Walter Friend ’23, all deceased, and cousin Walter Friend Jr. ’48. Rick lived in Newton, Massachusetts, where he had a 17-year career as an owner and operator of four McDonald’s restaurants, which he sold in the late 1980s. He moved to Tuftonboro in 1997 and became involved in the town’s budget committee and planning board. He also volunteered as a school aide and was president of the Universalist Fellowship of the Eastern Slopes in in Tamworth, New Hampshire. Rick had many hobbies, including photography, boating, motorcycling, nature and splitting and stacking wood. He is survived by his wife, Lois, daughters Amanda and Galen and two granddaughters.
