Richard J. Price Jr. ’51

Richard J. Price Jr. ’51, a leader in class of ’51 alumni activities, died August 10, 2012, in Stone Mountain, Georgia. He is survived by his wife, Peggy, three children and seven grandchildren. Dick served the class as a member of its executive committee, co-chair of its 45th reunion and as a perennial volunteer in Alumni Fund and capital giving campaigns. He grew up in West Virginia and attended Staunton (Virginia) Military Academy, where he was a three-sport athlete. At Dartmouth he was a member of Sphinx and Delta Kappa Epsilon and played on the winning football teams of that era. John Clayton ’51, a quarterback on those teams, describes Dick as an outstanding guard. “He claimed he sacrificed his knees protecting me from opposing linemen. He did a good job!” Following three years in the U.S. Air Force Dick joined Union Carbide Corp. and served for nearly 40 years in its Eveready battery division. As vice president of sales and marketing he epitomized the Energizer Bunny in his travels around the United States and the world. He participated in Harvard’s advanced management program in 1977. Dick loved sports, especially golf, tennis and fishing. He was an active supporter of Dartmouth athletics, attending games and contributing to the sponsors program. Despite the demands of his work he always found time to give back to the communities in which he lived. At a memorial service in Stone Mountain, friends described him as a model of loyalty, honesty, generosity, friendship and family responsibility.
