John Seldon Hatfield ’51
John Seldon Hatfield ’51, a clinical psychologist with a special interest in addressing the needs of under-served populations near his longtime home in Burlingame, California, died at home on July 19, 2012. He is survived by his daughter Paula. John earned his Ph.D. in psychology at UC Berkeley following graduation from Dartmouth. He specialized in clinical psychology with a focus on community mental health in the San Mateo County Mental Health Services, as well as an active private practice. He was proud of his work doing psychotherapy with individuals, couples and groups; administrative roles; supervision of staff and interns; and later home visits with geriatric patients. John gracefully managed his kidney disease and other medical problems for years with patience, humor and determination to enjoy life to the fullest. Throughout his life he enjoyed spending time with friends and family, dining in restaurants, spending time at the Russian River, traveling in the United States and other countries, attending Magic Theatre performances, playing poker, reading the San Francisco Chronicle and both watching on TV and attending San Francisco Giants and 49ers games. At Dartmouth John was a member of Casque & Gauntlet, Kappa Sigma and Green Key. He was active on the Aegis and as a member of the Glee Club. Howard Fuller ’51 officiated at a celebration of John’s life in Burlingame. Other classmates in attendance were Herm Christensen and George Bikle.
