Henry H. Townshend Jr. ’43

Henry H. Townshend Jr. ’43 died July 28, 2012. Harry graduated from Hopkins Grammar School in New Haven, Connecticut, where he was class treasurer, president of the honor society and on the staff of the school newspaper and yearbook. He was also active in football, swimming and track. At Dartmouth Harry majored in economics and was a member of the Bartlett Tower Society, Delta Kappa Epsilon and Storrs House. He was also on the football team. He left Dartmouth in January 1942, enlisted in the Army and was commissioned a second lieutenant in ordnance. He was discharged as a captain four years later. For the next seven years he was plant manager at the Martin Firearms Co. in New Haven. He then started his own businesses—the J.T. Huy Manufacturing and J.T. Huy Realty companies—manufacturing power tools for utility companies and industrial real estate. Active in New Haven, Harry was chairman of the police commission for three years; alderman of the 32nd Ward for three years; and ran for Mayor twice, but, to quote Harry, “got whomped.” He held several directorates—Union and New Haven Trust Co., New Haven Historical Society, New Haven Burial Grounds, Grace New Haven Hospital and Hinden Hall Country Day School as well as several corporate posts. Harry was the former president and director of Amateur Field Trial Clubs of America. He also loved hunting, fly fishing (made his own flies), dogs and painting. Harry is survived by his wife, Doris, whom he married in 1942; three daughters; two sons; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
