Wayne Morrett Davis ’73


Wayne Morrett Davis ’73 died on May 16 after a long illness. At the time of his death Wayne lived in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. A native of Dayton, Ohio, he came to Hanover from Butler High School. At Dartmouth Wayne majored in anthropology and was a member of Kappa Kappa Kappa. After graduation he pursued a career in print journalism, working for the Associated Press in various places in the United States and on assignments overseas. Wayne was the news editor of the AP bureau in Charleston, West Virginia, from 1980 to 1987 before moving to the District of Columbia to serve as the news editor of the AP Washington bureau. In 1990 he was appointed the Gannett Chair of Journalism at Marshall University’s School of Journalism in Huntington, West Virginia, where he taught reporting, writing and editing. Wayne’s journalistic skill and sense of humor had a positive formative influence on younger reporters under his supervision. He enjoyed traveling and had a music collection of almost 11,000 songs. Wayne’s marriage to Samme Lynn Gee ended in divorce. He is survived by a sister.
