Peter Pennington Herrick ’60

Peter Pennington Herrick ’60 of Annapolis, Maryland and formerly of Crofton, Maryland, and Calabash, North Carolina, passed peacefully on August 22 at the Mandrin Hospice House in Harwood, Maryland. Born in Beverly, Massachusetts, on April 15, 1938, to the late Charles and Esther Herrick, he spent his formative years in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts. Peter graduated from Phillips Academy Andover in 1956 and at Dartmouth was a well-known and respected classmate and active in a variety of sports, including lacrosse, rugby and wrestling. He majored in history and was a member of Alpha Phi Delta. His passion for sports led him in later life to develop and promote several youth athletic programs in his community. Following Dartmouth he served honorably in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1966. Peter had a 36-year career with the Department of Defense, during which time he spent two years in Vietnam, receiving the Meritorious Civilian Award for his service there. In the early 1990s Peter was instrumental in the creation of the National Cryptology Museum in Fort Meade, Maryland. His career took him around the world, with a focus on Asia, giving him a view of many diverse cultures. He was active in the Christian faith and was an elder and a deacon at Prince of Peace in Crofton and later an elder at Calabash Presbyterian Church. Peter is survived by his wife of 45 years, Frances; children Cathie, Cheryl and Charlie; brother John; 10 grandchildren; a nephew; and two nieces. A private service was held in Manchester-by-the-Sea.
