George F. Estabrook ’64

George F. Estabrook ’64 of Ann Arbor, Michigan, died on November 24, 2011. Though his family lived in many cities, he arrived at Dartmouth from Cornwall, New York, where he attended Cornwall High School and was president of the band and a member of the track team. He was a member of the Dartmouth Band and the DOC. George majored in mathematics and was also interested in biology. After graduation he taught mathematics for two years at Franklin Pierce College and then became a research associate at the New York Botanical Garden, where he started to integrate his background in math with his interest in biology. That ultimately led him to a graduate program at the University of Colorado, where his master’s thesis, “Partial Orders in Phylogeny,” combined his passions. In 1970 he accepted a position at the University of Michigan Herbarium. Later he obtained a faculty position in the department of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Michigan, where he was employed at the time of his death, having published more than 100 scientific papers during his career. He is survived by his ex-wife, Dr. Bronwen Gates, their children Edward, George and Ruth, wife Virginia Hutton and their children Lili and Peter. For further details, click here.
