Frederick Alexander Doane ’63


Frederick Alexander Doane ’63 died November 12, 2011, at his residence in East Dorset, Vermont. Fred was born in Boston, grew up in Lynnfield, Massachusetts, and graduated from Wakefield (Massachusetts) High School. He majored in architecture at Dartmouth, was a member of the Dartmouth Outing Club and Yacht Club and an avid skier. After graduating Fred and his wife, Cherrill, established the Barn Ski Lodge in Winhall, Vermont. Fred later operated the Mad Tom Orchard, a popular apple orchard in East Dorset, Vermont, until 1996. He was also a ski instructor at Stratton Mountain Ski School from 1964 until 2010. Fred experimented for many years with hybridized roses and was a member of the Rose Hybridizers Association. He was an accomplished violinist, a world traveler in the mid-1960s and a skilled bicyclist. Fred is survived by his daughter Laura, stepdaughter Mozelle, brother Stephen, sister Elaine and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by his partner, Scott Mackenzie, who died September 25, 2011. Donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
