George “Joe” Jackson Scully ’52

George “Joe” Jackson Scully ’52 of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, died peacefully on November 16, 2011, at Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough, Maine. He was born in Boston and grew up in Orchard Park, New York. He graduated from the Nichols School in Buffalo, New York (whose sports nickname, prophetically, is “Big Green”). At Dartmouth Joe had a distinguished record. He was a member of Alpha Delta Phi and Casque & Gauntlet. He graduated magna cum laude as part of the Tuck School five-year plan and as a Rufus Choate Scholar and member of Phi Beta Kappa. He was awarded the Kenneth Archibald Athletic Prize as the top scholar-athlete for his academic record and his soccer, lacrosse and hockey varsity letter achievements. He then served as an officer in the Navy for three years before beginning his long and prominent career in banking and finance. He began at Casco Bank in Portland, Maine, worked his way up to treasurer and then moved on to become president of Portland Savings Bank. In the 1980s he decided to branch out on his own and become an independent financial consultant, where he worked with many local individuals and businesses. His father, Donald Scully, class of 1918, and brothers Donald Jr. ’49 and John ’57 were also Dartmouth alumni. He is survived by his wife, Susan, whom he married in 1956; children Jennifer, Jim and John ’91; and many grandchildren.
