Rex Felton Jr. ’45


Rex Felton Jr. ’45 of Tiffin, Ohio, died January 7 at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio. He came to Dartmouth from Tiffin and wrote that coming up the hill to see Baker Library for the first time was a memory he always cherished. He received his A.B. in 1945 and his M.B.A. from Tuck in 1947. He was in the Navy from 1942-46 with officer training at Harvard, served in the Philippines and witnessed the hydrogen bomb test at Bikini Atoll. Prior to his retirement in 2003 he was with several insurance companies in Iowa, Michigan and New York before returning to Tiffin, where he was a member of the local American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts, Rotary club and Elks lodge 94 and the past president of the Tiffin Jaycees, from which he received the Man of the Year Award. He was also a past president of the National Machinery Foundation. Rex enjoyed golfing and was a member at Mohawk Country Club and Clinton Heights Golf Course. He traveled the world. Rex enjoyed playing the trombone in area jazz bands, and went by the nickname “Tune.” He ran for mayor in 1960 and was on the city council for eight years. His smile and humbleness will be missed. He married Phyllis Hakes in Findlay on February 15, 1947, and they celebrated 60 years together. He leaves sons James ’70 and Rex and daughter Susan.
