Theodore de la Ree Hopper ’43

Theodore de la Ree Hopper ’43 died July 4, 2011. Ted graduated from Westwood (New Jersey) High School. At Dartmouth he was a member of the band and orchestra, the German and Dramatics clubs and the track team in his senior year. Ted majored in chemistry. During the war he was sent to the Trojan Powder Co. in Ohio, which produced munitions for the war effort. While he was there he married Esther Simpson in 1944. After the war he joined U.S. Industrial Chemicals before moving on to Shell Chemical Corp. and then the organic chemical division of the FMC Corp., from which he retired in the late 1980s. Retirement gave Ted and Esther more time to travel and to enjoy their summer home in the mountains of West Virginia. A very active member of the Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church, he was an elder and deacon, sang in the choirs and worked with the Rehabbers. He was also a liturgical actor and a Sunday school teacher. He was predeceased by Esther and his son James. He is survived by his daughters Lee and Martha, eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
