Graydon Powers ’57

Graydon Powers ’57 died on September 11, 2011, at the Sunrise at Fair Oaks assisted-living facility in Virginia. He had been suffering from Parkinson’s disease and dementia. Gray came to Dartmouth from Baltimore, majored in government and was active in the Dormitory Council, soccer, lacrosse, the Film Society, Cosmopolitan Club (as treasurer), Ledyard Canoe Club and Navy ROTC. After serving as a Navy officer for three years, Gray settled in Washington, D.C. He was president successively of the American Textile Machinery Association, the Scientific Apparatus Makers Association, the American Concrete Pipe Association and the Synthetic Organic Chemical Manufacturers Association, from which he retired in 1998. He had begun his career in 1960 in entry-level jobs in several other trade associations. He was a former president of the Greater Washington Society of Association Executives and had been a member of River Bend, Tantallon and Washington golf and country clubs. His interests included golf, music and barbershop singing. A former resident of Arlington County and McLean, Virginia, Gray retired to Hilton Head, South Carolina. In 2008 he moved to Gainesville, Virginia, and then to Sunrise at Fair Oaks in 2011. Gray is survived by his wife of 44 years, Joan, children Stephanie and Ryan and three grandchildren.
