William John Conway Sr. ’39

William John Conway Sr. ’39, who founded DialAmerica Marketing, died on March 12, 2009. He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia, son William Jr. and brother Robert. He is survived by children Arthur and Anne; grandchildren Frank, Christopher, Thomas, Carolyn, Colleen and Kathleen; seven great-grandchildren; and brother Harry. He grew up in Hackensack, New Jersey, graduated from Dartmouth and went to Tuck School of Business. He was one of the first recipients in New Jersey of the American Legion School Award and was the interscholastic tennis champion of northern New Jersey. Conway had been the worldwide circulation director of Life magazine when he founded Life Circulation Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Time Inc. The unit was charged with maintaining Life magazine’s 8-million circulation base. As part of his duties Conway introduced telephone marketing as a means to sell and retain magazine subscriptions. This success prompted him to found DialAmerica Marketing in 1976. The tele-services firm is currently located in Mahwah, New Jersey. He served in World War II as an aeronautical engineer for the Navy.
