James Francis Houghton ’45

James Francis Houghton ’45, M.D., of Green Valley, Arizona, and Pelican Lake, Minnesota, died of a rare cancer infection June 4. He came to Dartmouth from Lincoln High in Jersey City, New Jersey. In two quick years he became a member of Phi Sigma Kappa and Green Key Society. He went to medical school at the University of Maryland. Jim married his wife, Jeanne Bull, in 1949. He tried his specialty of internal medicine and cardiology in New Jersey and then Texas and decided to join in the founding of the Dakota Clinic in Fargo, North Dakota, in 1955. He saw that group of multi-specialists grow from 13 doctors to 200 in the 32 years he was a partner. In the 1960s that medical group saw a need for a hospital and helped start a nonprofit hospital without public or government funds that now occupies a full city block. He volunteered for the United Fund. He recruited for Dartmouth and worked for educational TV and the American Heart Association. Jim also flew his own plane for work and pleasure. He and Jeanne decided on a move to Green Valley after 32 years in Fargo. This allowed Jim to spend 17 years guiding visiting motorists as a volunteer with the Arizona Highway Patrol. He was also a guide at nearby Tumacácori Mission. He is survived by Jeanne, two daughters and two sons.
