James Robert Grant Jr. ’45


James Robert Grant Jr. ’45 passed away peacefully of natural causes at his home in San Diego on May 3. He had come to Dartmouth from West High in Rochester, New York. He served in the Pacific as a gunnery officer on the USS The Sullivans and afterward in China. In 1946 he met and married his wife of 65 years, Margery, while stationed in San Diego after serving in China. He had one semester to go at Dartmouth so they both came back and he received an A.B. in chemistry. They returned to southern California, where he spent the remainder of his life. Jim was a high school chemistry teacher and dean of students in the Riverside Unified School District, during which time he was awarded seven National Science Foundation grants. Upon retirement he and his wife moved to Ocean Beach, California, where he was an avid sailor, handball and tennis player. He was an artist, inventor, problem-solver, hiker and collector of MG cars. Jim is survived by his wife, Marge, children James III ’69 and Susan, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
