John Alexander Bartlett ’52

John Alexander Bartlett ’52, a 46-year resident of Portola Valley, California, died peacefully on July 1 in the presence of his family. A native of New York State, John was born in Niagara Falls and grew up in Lewiston, New York. He prepared for college at the Hill School and graduated from Dartmouth with a degree in economics. He was a member of Alpha Delta Phi and Dragon. He served during the Korean War as naval officer on the destroyer USS Bearss. After his service in the Navy he moved to San Francisco, where he met and married his wife, Jeanne. The couple continued to live in San Francisco until moving to Menlo Park (Ladera), California, and then to Portola Valley. John recently retired from Coldwell Banker after working for more than 40 years in the residential and commercial real estate business in the Bay Area. He was an avid tennis player, fly fisherman and golfer. John served the College and his class as a class agent, enrollment interviewer and special gifts volunteer. John had numerous Dartmouth relatives, including his great-grandfather, Samuel Colcord Bartlett, who was president of Dartmouth from 1877 to 1892. The family name lives on in Bartlett Hall and Bartlett Tower. In addition to Jeanne, his wife of 52 years, John is survived by children Stewart, Lindsay, Shelly and Peter and eight grandchildren.
