Charles C. Randolph III ’48
Charles C. Randolph III ’48, who was living in Solana Beach, California, died May 10 from Parkinson’s disease. “Jim” came to Dartmouth from Culver (Indiana) Military Academy in March 1944 under the Navy V-12 program, went into the service in July 1945 in the Navy V-5 flight training program, was then discharged and returned to Dartmouth in the fall of 1946 with his first wife, Joan. He joined Psi Upsilon and took his A.B. in economics with two semesters at Tuck during his V-12 sojourn. He listed his extracurricular activities in a wide variety of part-time jobs and particularly remembered painting a huge power-plant boiler in White River Junction, Vermont, at $1.25 per hour. He recalled “some wonderful professors, the beauty of Dartmouth and its surroundings and the fellowship of students.” Jim worked for McGraw Hill from 1948 to 1983 and was then a financial consultant for a couple of years. He then served as chairman of the Magazine Publishers Association, trustee of Outward Bound, trustee of the Advertising Council and secretary for a homeowners’ association. He enjoyed golf, baseball, travel and nature. He was predeceased by son Peter. He is survived by his second wife, Donna, children Katherine and John and several grandchildren.
