Robert Reed Gray ’43

Robert Reed Gray ’43 died April 5. Bob grew up in Yonkers, New York, and graduated from the Charles E. Gordon High School. At Dartmouth Bob majored in economics and graduated with distinction in his major. He was a member of Theta Delta Chi, Glee Club, Camera Club, crew, film workshop and the Dartmouth Players. After graduation Bob became a pilot in the Navy, eventually flying multi-engine transports between Asia and Oakland, California. After the war he went to Harvard Law School, graduated in 1948 and joined a Wall Street law firm. In 1951 his love of flying led him to become general counsel in the Office of the Civil Aeronautics Board in Washington, D.C. In 1952 he married Anne “Susie” Skinner. Soon thereafter he was called back into service during the Korean War. After the war ended Bob remained active in the Naval Reserve until 1966 and then continued to fly privately for many more years. In 1953 he returned to his previous job briefly, then in 1955 entered private law practice in Washington with Hale, Russell & Stenzel. In retirement in 1984 Bob and Susie built a new home in New London, New Hampshire, and Bob was often a guest lecturer on aviation economic and safety subjects. He served his class as secretary and agent and as a member of the reunion committee (and as chair) and class executive committee. He is survived by Susie, children Susan, Pamela, Robert, Anthony and Geoffrey and 14 grandchildren.
