John F. Morrissey ’46

John F. Morrissey, ’46 M.D. died June 14, 2011 at home in Bend, Oregon. After graduating from Harvard Medical School in 1949 John served in the Korean War as a battalion surgeon. He spent his entire career at the University of Wisconsin, where he retired in 1989 as professor of medicine in the field of gastroenterology. From 1973 to 1984 he was vice chairman of the department of medicine. John was a pioneer in the use of the gastric camera and established the first endoscopic training program in the United States. In 1983 he received the Rudolph Schindler Award, the highest honor from the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, where he served as president from 1976 to 1977. After retirement John stayed active in national committees and boards for many years. John spent most of his retirement years in Bend, where he enjoyed playing golf, hiking and playing bridge. After losing his first wife, Ruth, in 2001, at age 78, he fell in love again and married Shirley Downing. John is survived by Shirley, daughters Ann and Sara and grandsons Robin and Jon.
