Russell Dean Sawyer ’51

Russell Dean Sawyer ’51 died on August 19, 2008, at home in New Woodstock, New York, of numerous health issues. Born and raised in Syracuse, New York, he graduated from its Nottingham High School, pledged Theta Delta Chi, played football and lacrosse and left Dartmouth after two years to graduate from Champlain College in 1952. He served four years in the U.S. Navy before joining the family business, Sawyer Industries, and remained active in the business until his retirement as CEO in 2002. Russ married Jane Landel in 1953 and by 1961 had a family of two sons and a daughter. A history major at Champlain, his interests included the Civil War, early Adirondack settlements and life at the great camps. He is survived by Jane, sons Thomas and Robert, daughter Martha and four grandchildren.
