William Adams Russell ’39
William Adams Russell ’39 died March 2 at his home in Francestown, New Hampshire. Bill did his secondary school at Suffield (Connecticut) Academy. At Dartmouth he majored in English and was a member of Zeta Psi, the German Club and Bait & Bullet. During World War II Bill served in the Navy as a gunnery officer and later as commander of a gunboat in the Pacific at Okinawa and the Philippines. He served in the occupation of Japan and was awarded the Bronze Star for his war service. After the war Bill worked for the Norton Co. in Toledo, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; and Worcester, Massachusetts. In 1965 he served briefly at Dartmouth as special assistant to the president, and in 1969 he was with the Carborundum Co. in Niagara Falls, New York, and Europe. From 1976 to 1980 he was vice president of the Monadnock Region Association in Peterborough, New Hampshire, and from 1981 to 1984 he served two terms in the N.H. House of Representatives. From the 1950s through the 1970s Bill owned the Peterborough movie theater. He enjoyed sailing, travel and especially the time spent with his family. Bill is survived by his wife, Carol; children Kathleen, Donald ’68, Elizabeth and Isis Latham; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by children Karen and Bruce.
