Philemon Cheverton Roy Jr. ’62

Philemon Cheverton Roy Jr. ’62, M.D., of St. Mary’s Point in Lakeland, Minnesota, passed away peacefully and surrounded by his family on January 30 after a long journey with Alzheimer’s disease. At Dartmouth Phil was a brother of Kappa Sigma/Chi Gamma Epsilon, majored in biology and played hockey all four years. After graduation he continued on to medical school at the University of Minnesota, then to surgical residency and the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam and at Fort Bragg, near Fayetteville, North Carolina. Finally he returned to Minnesota where, as a partner of St. Paul Surgeons, he served the Twin Cities community for more than 25 years. Phil loved his family, with whom he enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities from raising orchids to trout fishing to working around his home. In our 25th reunion yearbook he wrote, “Life has been almost too busy. Should now be time to slow down and start to sniff the roses, enjoy the family and the friends. Medicine has demanded too much.” Phil is survived by his wife of 46 years, Barbara; children Jennifer, Heidi, Elizabeth and Chris; and eight grandchildren.
