Joseph Paul Harvey Jr. ’43

Joseph Paul Harvey Jr. ’43 died June 12, 2010, at his home in Pasadena, California. He attended Dartmouth for three years before entering Harvard Medical School, from which he graduated in 1945. At Dartmouth he was a member of the Outing Club, the German Club and Sigma Alpha Epsilon. For nine months following graduation from medical school Paul interned in surgery at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston before entering the Army as a first lieutenant in the Medical Corps. His service included time with the 243rd General Hospital with the 12th Infantry Division Philippine Scouts and the 73rd Station Hospital in Pusan, Korea. After 24 months of active duty Paul was discharged from the Army and went to University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, where he received training in orthopedic surgery. For seven years, starting in 1955, Paul was a member of the staff of the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. During his years in New York he met and married Martha Toole, who became, he sais, “my best friend and constant companion.” In 1962 he joined the faculty of the University of Southern California Medical School in Los Angeles, becoming professor and chairman of orthopedics and director of orthopedics at the Los Angeles County General Hospital. Paul was rightfully proud of the more than 180 orthopedic surgeons whom he helped to train. He served his class as agent, 1985-2002, and as a regional agent in 1983. Paul is survived by Martha; daughters Maryalice, Martha ’82, Frances, Lucy ’85 and Laura; their husbands; and 12 grandchildren.
