Carroll M. “Kim” Swezey Jr. ’50
Carroll M. “Kim” Swezey Jr.’50 died in November 2009. While at Dartmouth Kim was a member of the Marching Band and the Dartmouth Outing Club. He served as business manager of the Jack-O-Lantern and belonged to Theta Chi, where he was listed in the Aegis as being a member of the class of 1948. He had indeed begun as a ’48 but, in his own words, “dropped out for two years to fight valiantly (20th Air Force Marching Band) in a ‘popular war.’ ” Following graduation he passed a year at New York University’s School of Retailing, married his sister’s Colby Junior roommate Nancy Hunt and as a salesman joined his father’s department store, where, he says, “By dint of much hard work and deserved recognition I soon became president.” Nancy bore him one boy and five girls. The next generation produced five more girls and a boy. Kim was a true family man whose motto was “The only thing better than a big family is a bigger family.” By the time of his 50th Dartmouth reunion there were 39 members. Kim spent his entire business life with the family department store, which had grown to include five locations by the time of his retirement. A man of many interests, his latter years included photography, ballet, 20th-century art and, thanks to classmate Joe Medlicott, memoir writing, which resulted in a work titled “The Joy and Jolts of Retirement.” Kim is survived by Nancy and the rest of his large family.
