James Herbert Johnson ’48

James Herbert Johnson ’48 died in Sarasota, Florida, on July 23, 2010, of a heart attack. He and Betty had lived in Sarasota since his retirement from Southern New England Telephone Co. (SNET) in 1981. Jim came to Dartmouth and the V-12 program from Tabor Academy in 1943. He received his Navy commission in 1945. On his release from the service he returned to campus, joined the band and Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and majored in economics. He joined SNET from Dartmouth and managed offices for them in Connecticut for his entire working career. They lived in Wallingford. He was active in civic affairs, holding top offices in Rotary, YMCA, Red Cross, the local chamber of commerce and United Fund to mention a few. He continued his community and Dartmouth involvement in Sarasota. He interviewed for Dartmouth for many years. His brother Everett was a ’42. Jim and Betty were married for 62 years. She survives him, as do son David and daughters Susanne and Cynthia.
