Michael Hurley Biggs ’54


Michael Hurley Biggs ’54 passed away at his home in Placerville, California, on July 31. Mike entered Dartmouth from Walnut Creek, California, having attended Acalanes Union High School. At Dartmouth he was the leader of the Sultans, the popular on-campus Jazz band, and a brother of Sigma Nu. After graduation Mike joined the U.S. Marines, serving at Quantico, Virginia; El Toro, California; and Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. In 1956 he entered Stanford Business School, receiving an M.B.A. in 1958. He then worked in the retail field for I. Magnin & Co. for eight years before joining Scudder, Stevens & Clark in San Francisco as an investment counselor, from which he retired in 1999. While there he earned the designation of chartered financial analyst. Mike served Dartmouth as enrollment chair for San Mateo County and vice president of the Northern California Alumni Association. He also served as president of the board of directors of the Morgan Center for Autism, as chair of the investment committee for the Commonwealth Club of California and as development director of Planned Parenthood for the Bay Area. Mike’s musical skills as a pianist were enjoyed by many. His repertoire included everything from classical to contemporary jazz. He performed frequently with touring professional musicians. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ginny, three children and four grandchildren.
