Jonathan H. Winer ’73

Jonathan H. Winer ’73 died on March 17 at home in Melrose, Massachusetts of causes related to leukemia. Jonathan came to Dartmouth from Princeton High School in New Jersey. At the College he majored in economics and was a four-year member of the lightweight crew. After receiving a law degree at New York University Jonathan worked for the Nixon Hargrave, Devans & Doyle law firm in Rochester, New York, before moving to Burlington, Vermont, to work in the legal department of Green Mountain Power and later for its subsidiary KMS Mountain Energy, dedicated to wind power, as chief operating officer and then as president. More recently Jonathan was an energy consultant for La Capra Associates and for Essex Power Services in Boston. During the 20 years he lived in Burlington he was active in community activities and served for a time as president of his synagogue Temple Sinai in South Burlington. Jonathan was a Class A ranked chess player and served as director of Vermont’s scholastic chess program, in which his son Steven developed into a World Chess Federation master. Jonathan was also a dedicated runner and enjoyed skiing and photography. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, and children Steven and Rachel.
