Robert Edward Gilman ’54

Robert Edward Gilman ’54 passed away in Long Beach, California, on February 2 after a long bout with leukemia. Bob entered Dartmouth from Concord, New Hampshire, having graduated from Concord High School. At Dartmouth he was a chemistry major and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. After Dartmouth Bob obtained his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Michigan and began a lifetime of teaching and consulting in organic chemistry. He retired as a professor of chemistry from the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he also conducted research in reaction mechanisms for 30 years. After retirement Bob moved to southern California and was an active supporter of area opera companies. He served on the board of the Opera League of Los Angeles for five years, as well as working as a volunteer staff member of the Long Beach Opera, serving as controller, for 12 years. Bob is survived by his partner, Doris Koplik, two sons, a sister and brother Dick ’57.
