Robert W. Nissen ’41

Robert W. Nissen ’41 died on September 19, 2010, in Hinsdale, Illinois, where he had resided for 69 years. At Dartmouth Bob was a Tuck ’42 and a member of Alpha Delta Phi, Sphinx and Green Key. In World War II Bob served as lieutenant in the U.S. Navy at Guadalcanal and Okinawa and in the European theater in the invasions of Sicily, Salerno and Normandy. After the war he returned to the Midwest to become, eventually, president of the E.L. Essley Machinery Co. of Chicago and Oak Brook, Illinois. He also served as president of the American Machine Tool Distributers Association. Bob was married to June for 63 years and they raised daughters Julia and Deborah, who survive with six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He chaired the board of trustees of the Community House in Hinsdale in 1964 and was a longtime member and former director of the Hinsdale Golf Club. He was also a member of the Crystal Downs Country Club, the University Club and the Young Presidents Organization. As an alumnus he served on the class executive committee (1981-85) and the reunion committee (1985).
