Noel “Buz” Nathanson ’58

Noel “Buz” Nathanson ’58 passed away on April 27 at his home in Great Neck, New York, after an eight-month battle with cancer. Buz, a radiologist, grew up in Brooklyn when the local heroes were Carl Furillo, Gil Hodges, Pee Wee Reese and Jackie Robinson. He went to Brooklyn Friends School where he was co-captain of the soccer team, but his athletic passions were focused chiefly on Ebbets Field and Dem Bums who played there. It came as no surprise to friends that he was laid to rest adorned in both Dodgers and Dartmouth jerseys. In Hanover he majored in history, worked on The Dartmouth and Jack-o-Lantern and belonged to Tau Epsilon Phi, where he was social chairman. He earned his M.D. at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, returning to his alma mater to teach radiology after practicing privately in Brooklyn for a number of years. Art Lindenauer ’58 recalls that Buz loved to teach and did so until his final illness. Both Art and Joel Portugal ’58 recall that he was a loyal and substantial supporter of the College and the class, having served as a class agent and executive committee member. In addition to his passion for the Dodgers, he enjoyed a good game of golf, loved Broadway musicals (knowing lyrics by heart) and was a Civil War buff. Buz is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sue, children Gary ’85, Debbie and Lisa, sister Bobbie and eight grandchildren.
