David Lamphere Kendall ’45
David Lamphere Kendall ’45 of Dexter, Maine, passed away of a stroke November 9, 2009, at Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. He grew up “all across the Midwest” before he came to Dartmouth from Boone, Iowa. Dartmouth was interrupted by two years in the Navy in the South Pacific. He married Ann Reiter in June 1949 and they had three children—Margaret, Peter (deceased) and Douglas—six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Upon graduation Dave worked as a geologist at New Jersey Zinc Co. until 1960 and then began a career as a science teacher. He sought to instill in his students an appreciation of the grandeur, beauty and mystery of nature. He was the author of several books, including Glaciers and Granite: The Landscape and Geology of Maine and a biography of legendary Patten woodsman Ross McKenney, a great mentor to Dave in his Dartmouth years. In his retirement Dave was an active alum serving as a regional agent, a member of the executive committee and vice president of the class.
