Robert Bartlett Young ’57

Robert Bartlett Young ’57 passed away on December 12, 2009, following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. He had come to Dartmouth from the Cate School in Santa Barbara, California. At Dartmouth Bob majored in English and was a member of Delta Tau Delta, crew, the Rowing Club and ROTC. Shortly after his death his wife, Sally, wrote: “More important to Bob than his numerous accomplishments in the fields of journalism, banking, publishing and illustration or his college and graduate degrees from Dartmouth, Harvard Business, Columbia journalism and the art center in Pasadena, California, was the joy he took in writing and painting, good food, local and Italian wines, jazz and opera, travel and the laughter he shared with his family and friends. Bob shared warmth and friendship with everyone he met, and he will be greatly missed by the many people who loved him. A small family service was held immediately upon his passing and a spirited celebration of Bob’s life was planned for January. Cremation has taken place and his ashes were to be scattered over many meaningful spots of his life’s landscape, including his birthplace of Pasadena and final hometown of Morro Bay, California. He is survived by Sally; one brother; a son and daughter from his first marriage to his late wife, Gretchen; a grandson; a stepdaughter; and a large and loving family.” In the 50th reunion book Bob wrote: “So thank you, Hanover. Thank you, Dartmouth College. Thank you, Professor Stewart. Thank you, class of 1957.”
