James E. White ’57
James E. White ’57 passed away January 15 at the Arnot-Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, New York, with his family at his side. Jim was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and came to Dartmouth from the Punxsutawney (Pennsylvania) High School. At Dartmouth he majored in zoology and was a member of the dormitory committee, DOC and Ledyard Canoe Club. He received his Ph.D. from Rutgers in 1961, after having married Cynthia Will in 1960. They shared a devoted union filled with love and mutual respect during the next 45 years until Cynthia’s passing in 2005. Jim joined the faculty as a biology professor at Keuka College in the Finger Lakes region of New York in 1962. He served as an educator and mentor even after his retirement in 2008, returning to teach in the spring of 2009 as professor emeritus. During his career he served as chair of the biology department from 1968 to 1997. Jim was also involved in the Keuka Park, New York, community, volunteering 45 years of active service with the Branchport-Keuka Park Fire Department. During this time he served as fire chief for 27 years, then as a fire commissioner and most recently as president. Jim was a quiet, well-read man who was continuously learning, observing and educating. He took pleasure in seeing a student grasp a difficult concept or in sharing with others the wonders of bird watching. He is survived by two daughters, four grandchildren, his sister and several other family members.
