George Raymond Turner ’47
George Raymond Turner ’47 died in Northfield, Vermont, on October 8, 2009. He attended Athol (Massachusetts) High School and joined the class in the naval unit, played baseball and majored in English. He served in the military in World War II and in Korea. His experience led him to develop a course in military literature and literature of the sea as a professor of English at Norwich University. He earned an M.A from Columbia University in 1964 and received an honorary degree from Norwich in 2001. He taught from 1959 to 1969 and then became director of public relations for the university. He received a number of awards for his sports reporting to newspapers, wire services, radio and television. He retired in 1992. He served as Dartmouth club president from 1975 to 2009 and as a class agent from 1962 to 1971. He is survived by his wife and three children, including George ’75.
