James Robert Kingsdale ’65

James Robert Kingsdale ’65 of Crested Butte, Colorado, died of cancer in New York City on December 22, 2009. Jim was born in Buffalo, New York, and grew up in Brookline and Waban, Massachusetts. He attended Newton (Massachusetts) South High School prior to coming to Dartmouth, where he won the Frost Playwriting Contest in 1964 and saw his play performed as an undergraduate. Later he established the Kingsdale Fund in Drama, which provides funds for students to attend performances. Jim served in the U.S. Army after graduation and then graduated from Harvard Business School in 1969. Jim worked in venture capital and then started Paradigm Communications Inc., a cable television company, in 1980. After residing in New York City and Greenwich, Connecticut, for more than 20 years he retired from the cable television industry and settled in Crested Butte in 1994. He became a well-known advocate for several community projects. He was also a quiet contributor to many worthy causes and institutions. During the last several years he wrote a blog called Energy Investment Strategies. He was an avid tennis player, hiker, skier and bridge player who was only a few points away from becoming a life master. He is survived by his wife, Nina; son Andrew ’96; daughter Luisa and her husband, Eric, and children Maxwell and Cecilia; mother Margery; brother Jon and his wife, Rosalie; and sister Nancie and her husband, Mark. Remembrances may be made to Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network, 4813 St. Elmo Ave., Bethesda, MD 20814, or Living Journeys, P.O. Box 2024, Crested Butte, CO 81224.
