Edward Geoffrey Clapham ’57

Edward Geoffrey Clapham ’57 of Carroll, Ohio, was killed in a car accident on March 28, 2009. Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Jeff came to Dartmouth from Columbus Academy. At Dartmouth he was a member of Delta Tau Delta, Sophomore Orientation Committee, the Motor Sports Club and Ledyard Canoe Club. He obtained his law degree from Ohio State and then served in the U.S. Army. For 20 years Jeff had his own law practice in Columbus, specializing in real estate taxes and closely held corporations, until he retired in 2000. Jeff is best remembered by Dartmouth classmates who, like him, were sports car buffs. Randy Patterson ’57 writes: “For a time we jointly owned a 1950s flat-head Morris Minor that we had running pretty well and painted white with blue racing stripes, the U.S. colors in international racing. When the muffler was removed for competition the resulting loud noise was like ripping canvas, but it was quite slow and never did well in hill climbs and autocross events.” Dave Keith ’57 remembers traveling to various road races in the Northeast, “including a field trip to the Lime Rock Sports Car Club of America races with Randy Patterson and others. Jeff’s MG TD, ‘The Bronze Battler,’ was his pride and joy.” Jeff jointly owned a Morgan with his dad, and in retirement participated in open-track racing. He was both an avid reader and cyclist. Jeff is survived by his wife, Barbara, a brother-in-law, niece and several cousins.
