Norman Douglas Cassel ’53
Norman Douglas Cassel ’53 died on October 10, 2009, at his home in Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts. Doug entered Dartmouth from the Principia Upper School, where he was an accomplished three-sport athlete. At Dartmouth he majored in Tuck-Thayer, played football for three years and was a member of Sigma Nu. Not surprisingly, given his later passion for the sea, his service commitment was to the U.S. Navy. Following his business career, which was with DuPont, he took early retirement and moved on to his great love—the sea—full time on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. Doug was a national sailing champion, commodore of his yacht club and president and owner of a sailboat renting company, which he and wife Pam grew to include a restaurant and a retail store named Wind’s Up! Besides his wife, Doug is survived by four children and numerous grandchildren. We miss him; he was a good one!
