Matthew Peter Smith ’43

Matthew Peter Smith ’43 died April 29, 2009. Mat went to Clark School in Hanover before attending Dartmouth. He majored in chemistry in college and was a member of the undergraduate Scientific Society. During the 1940s he was a chemist for Rohm and Haas, chief chemist for Socony Paint Products into the 1980s and then plant manager for Mobil Chemical until his retirement soon after his 60th birthday. He married Patricia Clapp in 1944. They became dedicated travelers in later years, especially enjoying cruises. Mat always enjoyed golf, bridge, gardening and puzzles of all kinds. Patricia survives him, as do their children Carol, Pete and Debbie.
