Richard J. Mason ’57
Richard J. Mason ’57 passed away on March 15 after a long battle with multiple myeloma. A lifetime resident of the Worcester, Massachusetts, area, Dick came to Dartmouth from Deerfield Academy. While at Dartmouth Dick was a member of Alpha Theta and participated in debating, wrestling and the Undergraduate Council. Many of his classmates also remember him as coxswain of freshman lightweight crew. Dick spent his career as a broker/advisor in the insurance industry, ending as president of his own firm, R.J. Mason Insurance Agency, in Worcester. He was active in many local organizations, including the Worcester Foreign Relations Committee, Worcester Boys & Girls Club, Level Lodge (Masons), Worcester Insurance Society (as president), Friends of Worcester Art Museum Committee (as president) and the Massachusetts 1972 state championship squash team (as captain). He was also president of the Dartmouth Alumni Club of Worcester and served the College and his class as job development/career advisor, fraternity/sorority agent, 30th reunion committee member and class agent. Dick is survived by his wife, Louise, sons Daniel ’93 and Joshua, two grandchildren and brother David ’64. His father, George Mason, was also a Dartmouth alumnus, class of 1923. Fraternity brother Tom Patterson ’57 remembers Dick as a “genuinely nice guy, one of the ’mates I make a point of looking for whenever I return to campus for reunions.” Fred Kumm ’57, a senior-year roommate, writes: “His loss saddens me deeply. He used to spend time skiing weekends with us at Jay and we enjoyed visits at his Rockport [Massachusetts] home.”
