William Johnston Cummings Jr. ’48

William Johnston Cummings Jr. ’48, M.D., died on May 10 in Springfield, Massachusetts. He came to Dartmouth from Milbury (Massachusetts) High School in 1944. After naval service he returned to campus, completing his undergraduate degree in 1948 and moving right into Dartmouth Medical School as a member of the 1950 class. Bill was active in DOC while on campus. He completed his M.D. at Boston University in 1952. A surgical residency at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York, preceded a shift to an anesthesiology residency at the Veterans Administration hospital in White River Junction, Vermont, and Mary Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover. In 1963 he moved to Mercy Hospital in Springfield, where he became a diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesia and practiced until retirement in 1995. Bill skied actively for more than 50 years and coached skiing and soccer for many years. He is survived by Alice, his wife for nearly 58 years, and children Peter, Carol, Chris ’78, Bob and Steve.
